Function A lightning arrester, also known as a surge arrester or lightning diverter, is a device used to protect electrical equipment and systems from high-voltage surges caused by lightning strikes or other transient overvoltages. It is designed to provide a low-resistance path for the surge current to flow to the ground, thereby protecting the equipment from damage. While there are different types of lightning arresters available, the most common type is the metal oxide varistor (MOV) arrester. MOV arresters consist of a series of metal oxide discs connected between the electrical line and ground. When a high-voltage surge occurs, the varistor material conducts the excess current and diverts it to the ground, effectively clamping the voltage and preventing it from damaging the connected equipment.
